The Georgia Avenue Shift: How Silver Spring's Dining Center of Gravity Moved This Summer

If you have lived in Silver Spring for more than a few years, your mental map of where to eat probably still centers on Ellsworth Drive. That map is out of date.

The interesting openings of 2026 are not on the pedestrian strip. They are strung along a roughly ten-block stretch of Georgia Avenue between Fenton Street and East-West Highway, with a second cluster forming out at the Shoppes of Burnt Mills. Ellsworth Place is still busy, but it is busy in a different way now. Here is what actually changed, and how to use it before the weather turns.

The Georgia Avenue Corridor Absorbed the New Capital

Three notable openings in the last six months all landed on the same stretch of Georgia. That is not coincidence. It is the pattern.

Society Seafood House opened its doors on April 10, 2026 in downtown Silver Spring, a 6,200-square-foot chef-driven seafood restaurant. The address is 8229 Georgia Avenue, and it is the rebrand of the former Society Restaurant & Lounge, founded by former professional basketball player Jason Miskiri, a Montgomery County native who attended Montgomery Blair High School before playing at George Mason University and later reaching the NBA. The concept shift matters more than the name. Silver Spring has plenty of global cuisine and very little destination seafood, and the room is now built around oyster platters, whole grilled fish, and a bar program.

A few blocks north, Chez Aviole is now open at 7912 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring, taking over the former Port-au-Prince Haitian Cuisine space. The menu highlights Haitian favorites like accra fritters, fried plantains, patties, wings, fritay, griot, oxtail, tassot goat or beef, and boulet.

Between them, at 8081 Georgia, Vibe Restaurant and Lounge has opened, replacing Sky Blue Lounge. The Afro fusion, Afro futuristic upscale dining concept is led by Nicolette Orji, professionally known as Nikki The Jeanius, who serves as co-founder, CEO, and chief creative officer.

The corridor now reads like this:

Three replacements in three years, each one a step up in kitchen ambition. If you have not walked this stretch after dark since 2023, it will not look the same.

Ellsworth Place Was Not Abandoned. It Was Reformatted.

The mall itself became the story last fall. Commas Food Hall opened on the third level of Ellsworth Place mall in September. A globetrotting upgrade to the standard food court, its 12 vendors serve a variety of cuisines, from traditional Nepali dumplings at MoMo Hub to jerk chicken wings at the Champs Kitchen and loaded fries at Tato's. The cocktail bar C³ offers beer, wine, and signature drinks such as the "Old Ellsworth," made with whiskey from Baltimore's Sagamore Spirit Distillery.

Tato's has since expanded. Tato's is now open at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda, in the former 7-Eleven and Chocolate Moonshine space. The potato-focused concept, which debuted last year at Commas Food Hall in Silver Spring, specializes in customizable fries, edges, and loaded potatoes. Silver Spring incubated the concept; Bethesda got the second location. That is a sequence worth registering.

Sitting directly across from all of this is the AFI Silver Theatre and the Metro entrance. The practical result is that a Friday evening on the Georgia Avenue side of downtown can now string together a movie, a food-hall dinner, and a sit-down drink without ever crossing Colesville Road.

The Outer Ring Is Filling In on Columbia Pike

If you live closer to White Oak or Four Corners than to the Metro, the more useful development this summer is at the Shoppes of Burnt Mills.

Honeygrow has taken over the former California Tortilla space at the Shoppes of Burnt Mills on Columbia Pike and plans to open this summer. The Philadelphia-based chain launched in 2012 and serves customizable stir-fries, salads, and dessert bowls. The new Silver Spring restaurant will be Honeygrow's 14th in Maryland and its second in Montgomery County, following the Rockville location, which opened in 2018. The specific address is a 2,413 square foot storefront located at 10741 Columbia Pike.

At the same time, Charleys Cheesesteaks is slated to open this year at the former UPS Store location on Colesville Road. Charleys Cheesesteaks was founded in 1986 by CEO Charley Shin near Ohio State University and is best known for its Philadelphia-style cheesesteaks.

Neither is a headline concept. Both are useful. Together they answer a question the Ellsworth stretch never really did: where do you eat on a weeknight if you are driving, not walking?

Framed Up but Not Yet Open

Four projects are far enough along to plan around, even if none has a firm date yet.

• Dacha Beer Garden, at 1115 East West Highway in the former home of Denizens Brewing Co. Owner Ilya Alter told Bethesda Today on Tuesday that the restaurant is still moving through the permitting process with the county, but is hoping to open in the summer.
• Emma's Torch, a café and culinary training center for refugees, is anticipated to open in downtown Silver Spring this spring. The café and training facility will be on the ground floor of the 1200 East West apartments, which formerly housed NaiNai's Noodle and Dumpling Bar.
• Momiji Sushi, a Japanese eatery that will offer small sushi plates and ramen, is expected to open in the former home of Cubano's restaurant at 1201 Fidler Lane in downtown Silver Spring.
• Paris Baguette, a bakery chain with locations in Bethesda, Rockville and Gaithersburg, is slated to open a new downtown Silver Spring location in the fall.

Two of the four sit on East-West Highway within a block of each other. If both open on schedule, that intersection with Fenton will become its own micro-cluster, and the "downtown" definition stretches a little further south.

Veterans Plaza Is the Connective Tissue

New restaurants only feel like a neighborhood when there is a reason to be outside between them. That reason, this summer and fall, is Veterans Plaza.

The weekend rhythm through August is a fixed schedule worth putting in your calendar:

• Saturday, August 8: Freshfarm Farmers Market, 9am–1pm
• Sunday, August 9: Jamaica Fest, 12pm–9pm
• Saturday, August 15: Freshfarm Farmers Market, 9am–1pm
• Sunday, August 16: The Hey Cousin Culture Fest, 1pm–8pm

The Freshfarm cadence is the useful one for residents. It gives a Saturday morning anchor that pairs naturally with breakfast at any of the Georgia Avenue spots and a walk back with produce. The two Sunday festivals are worth planning around because they close the plaza to the usual foot traffic patterns.

The anchor date of the season, though, is September 12. Grammy-nominated Afro-Cuban artist Cimafunk will headline the 2026 Silver Spring Jazz Festival, a free outdoor concert beginning at noon on Saturday, Sept. 12, at Veterans Plaza in Downtown Silver Spring. The festival is scheduled for Sept. 12 from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. It will take place at Veterans Plaza. Organizers said that the festival is set up with two stages with "no break in the music." Cimafunk goes on late; Cimafunk will perform at 8:30pm on the mainstage.

There is a reason this year's festival is being staged as a bigger event than usual. The 2026 festival also marks the 25th anniversary of Silver Spring's designation as a Maryland Arts and Entertainment District. Since receiving the designation in 2001, Downtown Silver Spring has continued to grow as a destination for arts, entertainment, restaurants, and community events. The Jazz Fest is not a standalone show. It is the public marker for the 25-year arc that produced the rest of the openings on this page.

Reading the Map Now

If you draw the six most interesting food and drink stories of 2026 on a map of Silver Spring, three sit on a ten-block spine of Georgia Avenue, two more will sit on East-West Highway within walking distance of the Metro, and one sits out at Burnt Mills for the drive-in crowd. Ellsworth Drive is still the visible face of downtown, but it is no longer where the momentum is.

For a resident, the practical takeaway is straightforward. If you have been defaulting to the same three Ellsworth spots on Friday nights, you are missing about half the new inventory. Walk north on Georgia. Try Chez Aviole for Haitian, Vibe for something you have not eaten before, Society Seafood for a proper sit-down. Put Freshfarm on your Saturdays through the fall. Block off September 12.

Silver Spring has been quietly reshuffling for a while. This is the summer the reshuffle became visible from the sidewalk.
